Life differs even from one part of Kerala to other, Let me explain my native in Kerala, Thalassery which is located in Kannur District (Northern part of Kerala). Apart from Common Monsoon weather and food habits, Life differs followed with ancient cultural prints in the local land. It differs according to the local heritage & culture.
Thalassery also called as Tellicherry is commonly known for 3 C's Which is Circus, Cricket, Cake. Being once a British outpost, Thalassery claims many firsts – it is said to be where the first game of cricket in India was played by the British, where the first circus performed, and where the first Western bakery in Kerala was set up.
Sea Bridge : The most common hangout spot in Thalassery would be visiting this sea bridge locally called as Kadalpaalam which connects half way through the Sea. As per history, It was built in 1910 by East India Company to transport Commodities to Seashore as it had Large rocks at the Seashore. As of now, it is been restricted, Once it was used for spending some good times having a walk & for Recreational Fishing as a hobby.
Muzhapilangad Beach : This beach is the longest Drive-In Beach in Asia, It gives unique experience driving in amidst of Sea waves. Every year in the month of April, there will be a Beach festival.
Thiruvangad Ramaswamy Temple : One of the famous temple having deity as Lord Rama. Visiting this place early morning is pure Bliss having one hectare of temple tank & unique architectural structure of the temple having Wooden carvings & mural paintings. Vishu fest is been celebrated here in Grand manner.
Food : Apart from Cake, The place is known for Authentic Malabar style Thalassery Biriyani and must try Sea foods, as it is located in Malabar Coast line and usage of coconut is high in everything.Here people generally gives preference to variety of evening snacks with Chaaya (Tea) like Unniappam, Neiappam and Ari pathri and lot more. Few popular dishes which we crunch frequently listed below. Pazham pork, ethakka roast, etc.
Kozhikaal : Hey ! Don't assume this as Chicken with reference to the dish name! It is kind of United States of French fries.You can see lot of colorful private buses here but be careful if you are a First time passenger in Kerala, Just get into the seat as the buses drives crazy and most of the roads have lot of curves. So we can avoid ourselves thrown away into unknown forest areas with the cost of bus fare as well. But, one similar thing that unites all around India will be the unknown song played at the time of travel.
Theyyam (Form of Worship) : As this is performed in some specified areas of Kerala I don't think most of us would have came across this ritual. Theyyam is form of Worship performed by people across Northern part of Kerala and it is also native art for the locals who perform for consecutive generations. Theyyam has several types & the one who performs lives life of purity like Fasting and following Vegetarian food and regular Prayers. It gives Importance to nature and the locals used to get blessings and advice from the performer considering him as god. It has deep root of one's culture. Anyone who Visits Kerala should definitely plan a visit to this ritual and also Kalari ,Oldest Martial arts.
