India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate Following Pahalgam Attack

Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 27 people, including 25 Hindu tourists, a Christian tourist, and a local Muslim. The Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack. India accused Pakistan of supporting the militants involved, a claim Pakistan denies.

In retaliation, India launched "Operation Sindoor," conducting air and missile strikes on May 7 targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Punjab province. India stated that these strikes were aimed at eliminating militant camps responsible for the Pahalgam attack. Pakistan reported that the strikes resulted in at least 26 civilian deaths and 46 injuries, including the destruction of a mosque in Bahawalpur.

In response, Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets and vowed significant retaliation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned India's actions as an "act of war" and authorized the armed forces to undertake corresponding actions.

The situation has led to increased military exchanges along the Line of Control, with artillery fire reported and civilian casualties on both sides. Both nations have heightened military preparedness, with India postponing international engagements and conducting emergency drills.

Diplomatic relations have further deteriorated, with India suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and the Shimla Agreement, expelling Pakistani diplomats, and halting trade and communication links. Pakistan responded by suspending visas for Indian nationals, closing its airspace to Indian aircraft, and expelling Indian diplomats.

International actors, including the United Nations, the United States, China, and Russia, have expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict and urged both countries to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent further escalation.

The Kashmir region remains a flashpoint between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with the current standoff marking the most significant escalation since the 1971 war.
